Details

Let your imagination take flight and experience the past as if it were the present! There are places within the Palazzo Vecchio where time seems to have come to a standstill. Since 2000, the museum of the Palazzo Vecchio has made some of these special places accessible to the public – but only for small groups (no more than 12 per group).

Accompanied by an expert guide, experience unique places such as the Stairway of the Duke of Athens, the Studiolo (study) of Francesco I, the Tesoretto (little treasure) di Cosimo I, and the trusses of the ceiling of the Salone dei Cinquecento. While all these are very different one from the other, they offer an unusual and illuminating glimpses of the Palazzo Vecchio.

Built between 1342 and 1343, the Stairway of the Duke of Athens is an escape route built inside the thick walls of the Palazzo Vecchio, permitting unseen exit through a tiny door in Via della Ninna.

The Tesoretto and the Studiolo, located one above the other next to the Salone dei Cinquecento, are reminiscent of the refined and cultured climate of the Italian courts during the Renaissance. With their precious interiors and art work these rooms are significant examples of the Medici princes' passion for the arts and sciences.

The double rows of Vasarian trusses holding up the roof in the Salone dei Cinquecento and the imposing gilded recessed ceiling of this hall are a perfect expression of the unity between art and science that was typical of the Humanism and Renaissance periods.
