Details

Florence and Tuscany have always played an important role in the field of textile and fashion.
Since the Middle Ages the high quality of Florentine textiles was known all over Europe.  The clothing of the Florentine aristocracy and wealthy merchants tended to be elaborate and changed according to the dictates of the time.

It is here, in Florence, that the history of Italian fashion begins, the world famous “Made in Italy” label as a result of local tradition and the creativity of great minds and talents.

This tour, lead by an expert guide, will open the doors of a fascinating world to you, and surely delight your curiosity and love of the unique Italian style.

Your tour begins with an exploration of the Costume Gallery, the first state-operated museum dedicated entirely to study and preservation of costumes, accessories, and fabrics.
Today, the museum storage rooms preserve a collection of more than 6,000 items, including ancient and modern garments, accessories, and costumes for the theater and the cinema of great documentary value.

It is a unique gallery whose center is the famous Medici collection, among the world’s oldest, made up of the burial clothes worn by Cosimo I Grand Duke of Tuscany, his wife Eleonora de Toledo, and their son Don Garzia, all restored in the museum’s own restoration shops.

A significant place is also reserved for contemporary costume, with selected examples representing the greatest protagonists of international high fashion and prêt-à-porter, such as Worth, Poiret, Vionnet, Capucci, Missoni, Valentino, Pucci, Ferrè, and Yves Saint Laurent, to name only a few.

Your tour will then continue to the Ferragamo Museum. Its famous footwear collection documents the entire span of Salvatore Ferragamo’s career, from his return to Italy in 1927 to 1960, the year he died. It highlights his technical and artistic skills which made a fundamental contribution to the growth and establishment of “Made in Italy.” The items on display are periodically selected from the over 10,000 models in the museum’s archives and featured in biennial exhibitions that present different themes through Ferragamo shoes.

The Ferragamo footwear collection is also enriched by footwear production after the death of Salvatore Ferragamo, up to the present day. Every year, in fact, a number of models suitably representative of the season are entered in the Salvatore Ferragamo Archives which the museum draws on for its exhibitions, telling a century of history through footwear.
