The treasures of Umbria

Crossing the Tuscan countryside toward the southeast, your first stop is on the north shore of Lake Trasimeno, Italy's largest lake. Your driver will take you to see Passignano sul Trasimeno, a small medieval hamlet with ancient city walls and a beautiful fortress. Passignano is a much-loved lake resort and a magical location with views onto the lake and its islands.

After this visit, your scenic drive continues south through evocative landscapes until we reach the hill on which the ancient city of Perugia rises. Evidence of its Etruscan origin is preserved in the travertine walls and in the well located in the town center. Significantly less touristed, Perugia is one of the popular Italian cities of art, with a beautiful square in which you can admire architectural jewels including the superb Palazzo dei Priori (1293-1443) and the splendid Cathedral (1345). Beside the Cathedral rises the Loggia (1423), and one of the masterpieces of sculpture with an invaluable artistic value, the elegant Fontana Maggiore (13th century).

Your excursion continues across the valley, to the beautiful places where the patron saint of Italy, Saint Francis of Assisi (1181- 1226) lived, worked, and is buried.

On a lowland at the foot of Mount Subasio, the hill on which Assisi rises, you'll first visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built as a protection around the famous little church of the Porziuncola, where Saint Francis acknowledged his vocation and founded the Order of the Minor Friars.

This is the place where Santa Chiara (Saint Claire), one of Saint Francis' first followers, began her monastic life. Here you can also see the "rosebush without thorns", which continues to grow. According to legend, Saint Francis, overcome with desire to leave his way of life, rolled in the thorn bush. From that moment on, the roses turned into dog roses without thorns. You'll also see a statue of Saint Francis in whose stone hands doves have been nesting since times immemorial.

After the lunch break, your driver will take you up to the center of Assisi where you will meet up with an expert local guide who will accompany you on a visit through the civil and religious artistic heritage of the city.

You'll see the splendid Gothic Basilica dedicated to Saint Clare (1257), the Renaissance Chiesa Nuova with the elegant Dome and the Roman temple of Minerva, of which the first century AD facade remains.

Discover the 14th century Monte Frumentario and visit Saint Francis’ Basilica, a UNESCO heritage monument, built with white-rosy stone coming from Mount Subasio. You'll have the opportunity to admire the unparalleled fresco cycles by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, and Lorenzetti preserved inside the Basilica.

Breathe the special atmosphere of serenity and joy that this city emanates and you will understand why it has been chosen as symbol of peace by the delegates of the main world religions.

At the end of your visit, sit back and relax in your comfortable minivan – your driver will take you back to Florence, through the fabled Umbrian and Tuscan countryside.
