A Day in Assisi and Cortona

Take a journey through the rolling green hills of Tuscany and Umbria and discover the architectural and artistic jewels of Assisi and Cortona.

Assisi – birthplace of Saint Francis and UNESCO World Heritage site – crowns the spur of Mount Subasio, overlooking a picturesque valley characterized by gentle rolling hills and vineyards. Let your guide lead you through the narrow, winding streets and alleyways of this beautiful medieval town and learn about its history walking in San Francesco's and Santa Chiara’s footsteps. Experience the awe-inspiring Basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi, where Giotto’s frescoes representing the life of the saint await you. Discover why it is such an important pilgrimage site. Next, you will visit the Basilica of Santa Chiara – dedicated to and containing the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi, a follower of Saint Francis and founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, known today as the Order of Saint Clare.

After the guided tour you will have free time to stroll around the shops or sit outside in cafés and breathe in the atmosphere of peace characterizing this mystical city. Your tour continues with a visit of the interior of the Santa Maria degli Angeli church, birthplace of the Franciscan Order, and one of the most distinctive landmarks of the city, at the foot of the hill.

Crossing the border back into Tuscany your final stop for the day will be Cortona. This beautiful small town was built by the Etruscans on the top of a hill and is famous for its architectural wonders and amazing views over the surrounding landscape. Cortona is also known internationally for being the setting for the movie Under the Tuscan Sun (USA/Italy 2003) directed by Audrey Wells. Enjoy your free time admiring the Duomo, the Church of San Francesco and the Town Hall – or just by doing some shopping in the small craft shops. A real must is to sit in the central square and feel like a film star!
