Details

Women were of great importance in the political, artistic, and cultural events of the city of Florence, and therefore an intrinsic part of the unofficial and frequently forgotten history of the city. Learn to recognize their faces, hear about their personalities and their words through the sites that mirror their lives. This itinerary includes famous monuments - visited from an unusual point of view!

Your tour begins with Palazzo Medici, first residence of the Medici family, where the wives and mothers of the 1400s lived - Lucrezia Tornabuoni (a descendant of two of the oldest and most powerful Florentine families, the Tornabuoni and Guicciardini, wife of the eldest son of Cosimo de’ Medici, mother of Lorenzo “the Magnificent,” and grandmother of future popes Leo X and Clement VII) and Clarice Orsini (the not-so-popular wife of Lorenzo “the Magnificent”) for example. This is also where the wedding of Eleonora of Toledo and Cosimo I Medici took place.

Your visit continues at the Medicean complex of San Lorenzo, where all the men and almost all the women of the family are buried. Through the monumental tombs in the Medici Chapel and in the New Sacristy - works of celebrated artists such as Michelangelo - you will learn about their lives up to the last great woman of the house: Anna Maria Luisa dei Medici. She is considered the savior of the family history and heritage - because of her single most enduring act, the Family Pact, which ensured that all the Medicean art and treasures collected over nearly three centuries of political ascendancy remained in Florence.
